Attorney Noel Sterett has had the privilege of helping all types of religious organizations across the country with their zoning and land use matters. In that time, he has discovered that many houses of worship and other religious entities are not aware of the rights they have under a federal law called the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA).
In this video, Noel discusses the types of organizations that are protected by RLUIPA. Congress enacted these protections to counter widespread discrimination against religious organizations by local zoning officials.
The discussion covers houses of worship, such as churches, synagogues, mosque and temples; prayer meetings, Bible studies and other religious gatherings; and religious institutions such as religious schools, retreat centers, cemeteries, and faith-based social services which are provided by a religious organization. Noel also mentions lesser known religious uses protected by RLUIPA, such as religious camps, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, group homes, and pregnancy care center ministries.
If you want to learn more about RLUIPA or find out if your religious organization is protected, contact Noel or another member of the Dalton & Tomich religious land use and zoning team at 313.859.6000 or click here.
